Helpful Hints

1. Read a newspaper everyday to stay informed.

2. Look for graphs in the newspaper. Some are bar graphs some are pie charts, which ones are easier to understand. What other types can you find? Do they help explain information presented in a news story?

3. Look for stories that have dollar amounts, percentages and estimates. Make a list of the numerical information. How does this information pertain to the outcome of the article? These types of stories help with math problems in context.

4. Sports Page-A Mathematicians Dream: The sports page is full of math. Any student who likes sports but hates math needs to take another look at the sports page. It is full of averages, percentages and interpreting charts. When you like the subject it's easy to do the math.

5. Home Economics - Life Skills: Grocery shopping, buying a car, renting or buying a home, shopping for clothes, searching for a job, etc. it's all in the newspaper. Create a budget and do the math. Figure how far your money will go.

6. Financial Planning- Stocks and Bonds: The newspaper carries daily the stock market report. This information is usually presented in fractions. Look for a company you are familiar with and track it for a period of time. Once you do this you will be able to determine if this is a company who want to invest in.

7. Read the newspaper for stories about new businesses coming to your area. When a major employer comes to your town they don't always advertise job openings. The old saying the early bird gets the worm applies here. Know what is going on around you. Be informed about your town, your county, your state, your country and the world. Read a newspaper regularly.
